DIRECTIONS FOR DANCES AT HIGHLANDVILLE

To get to Highlandville from Decorah (about 13.5 mi.):
Take College Drive to Locust Road (W38) - Follow Locust Road about 9.4 mi. (going northeast) until you come to the intersection with A26 at the Locust church & school (there is a sign indicating Highlandville) - Turn right (east) onto A26 and follow for a little over 2.5 mi. to the intersection with A24 just before the Big Canoe Church - follow the turn left (north) onto A24 and follow for a little over 1.5 mi. to Highlandville - Drive all the way through Highlandville, past the Highland General Store and over the North Bear Creek bridge (you'll see the schoolhouse on your left as you cross the creek) - The schoolhouse driveway is to the left, just beyond the bridge. We recommend you keep in mind the fact that there is no running water at the schoolhouse, and that the restroom facilities consist of outhouses. There is a working refrigerator (ancient) at the schoolhouse for keeping beverages cool.

The Highlandville Schoolhouse was built in 1911 and has served as the site of Scandinavian-American old-time dancing since 1975. Members of Foot-Notes attended the dances in those early days and have been inspired to keep the tradition alive for generations to come.

DIRECTIONS FOR DANCES AT THE WEST RIDGE CHURCH (an occasional dance venue for us)

The West Ridge Church is both a scenic and historic site. Set in a beautiful rural area, the church was built of stone in 1863. The church is currently owned by the Curtin family.

From Decorah take Hwy 9 east. Turn north (toward Walmart) onto County Road A52, also known as Old Stage Road. In less than a mile, veer right to stay on Old Stage Road. In 6 miles turn left on Glenville Road, which is the intersection at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Travel 1.8 miles on Glenville Road to the 2nd intersection and turn hard right onto 258th Street. Go 2.6 miles to the church, staying right as you travel up the hill where 258th Street joins/becomes West Ridge Road. The church, called St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of West Ridge, is also known as the West Ridge Church, and it will be on your left. (Total distance from the Highway 9 turnoff near Walmart is 11.6 miles.
